Rebirth in ‘05

Yes, the rumours are true! After FOUR long years, Webzine will return later this year to San Francisco. We don’t know how we could have gone so long with a Webzine event either. What is Webzine you ask? Webzine is your momma’s cookies, a cup of warm tea, a masturbating monkey, Carl Sagan in the shower, orgasmic, educational, a party, a couple days at the beach, living chinchilla earmuffs, a Habitrail, a snort, 10 hours of sleep, a magical sword, a French kiss, a conference, an expo and celebration of independent publishing on the Internet. It’s an excuse to bring some of the most amazingly brilliant online content creators together under one roof, exposing their secrets so YOU, dear reader, are inspired to create your own. That’s what this is all about. Creativity, ideas and the tools to take you there. Listen, learn and leave inspired.

We envision three distinct zones or areas this year.

1. Speakers/panelists - This is where YOU and your new undiscovered friends get to tell the rest of us all about your project, revolution, porn site, subversion, pet, recipes, blog and podcast. Panels are forming now, so answer our call for speakers if you want in on this action. Ideas for panels and panelists are encouraged.

2. Masters Lounge - This is where you will relax, schmooze and rub brains with “experts” in something. Or maybe YOU are the expert and you’re ready to do a little mentoring. The idea is to connect people who are creating interesting things with people who have the hunger to create. Impart tips, inspire a story or break it down while sipping some tea or tonic. Network and connect in a relaxed environment. This room will be armed with a projector for you to plug your laptop or URL into.

3. Expo Zone - This the place to show it off, whether you are an independent publisher or you make the tools to make publishing interesting and easy. Tables will be provided for anyone to share their project. Sponsors will be able to show off and promote their schtuff here as well.

Bonus Zone: Parties - Webzine wouldn’t be complete without multiple endless chances to shmooze, network and be merry. We know that a lot of times, conferences are all about who you meet outside the walls of the official action. We aim to make sure there’s lots of that to go around before, during and after the main event.

All this for 2 days over the weekend of September 24 and 25th. The madness will take place at the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco.

We are making an effort to reach out to communities and individuals who may not normally find themselves represented at something like this. Audience participation is GREATLY encouraged. In fact, you won’t get in unless you make your own badge. Check the official Webzine FAQ for more info.

WEBZINE is a real world, face-to-face celebration of independent publishing on the Internet. It's part panel discussions and speakers, part workshops and much freeform collaboration, schmoozing and after-party boozing. The panel discussions aim to inspire, the workshops are hands-on forums of learning and the Master's Lounge is the unstructured place to share knowledge, ideas and URLs. DIY to its core, Webzine is rooted in zine culture and the love of making our own media.

Two days of panel discussions and presentations from speakers covering a micro gamut of the independent publishing landscape. Hear from people who are turning mainstream media on it's head through self-reporting, culture jamming, citizen journalism, experimenting with new forms of audio and video broadcasting and of course, sticking it to the Man.

Inspiration becomes creation when you make the tools and tricks work for you. Learn from leaders and creators of open source publishing tools, podcasts and video blogs. Step it up a notch by learning how to tailor your message, perfect your content with proper internet architecture and this new thing called microformats.

We would be lying to you horribly if we tried to tell you that we've covered everything and everyone there is to know in the world of independent online publishing. The Lounge is a place where you can share your ideas, project, URL or whatever you happen to be working on with fellow allies and future friends. This area will be an open, self-selecting and self-scheduled space equipped with a digital projector and a round table. Gather 'round and exchange knowledge and contact info.

Webzine 2005 is Accessible

Online tickets for Webzine 2005 went for an amazingly low price of $22 for the whole shebang. Day passes were $13 in advance. That's less than 1% the cost of some other well known annual conferences, all without the guilt, grime or starch.
